Choosing a Home's Color Palette - Homeowners - Coach Realtors

If you're unfamiliar with color therapy and color psychology, interior designers can assure you that both are used in home design to improve mental health and mood. Our REALTORS® also know how color choices impact a home's interior design appeal.

Color psychology indicates that colors can generate physiological changes like boosting your heart rate, hormone levels, and mood. It's pretty impressive that you can actually change body and mind functions as well as design appeal just by choosing the right room colors. The trick is to blend the colors you like into a pleasing combination for all the elements in your room.

Warm Colors

Warmer colors make a strong visual statement, so they're great choices for homeowners who aren't afraid to do something different and take a few risks.

  • Red – Red, the most intense color in the spectrum, can increase your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. It stimulates the mind and evokes feelings of love, passion, and power. Red is a great color choice for living rooms, dining rooms, and family rooms where people gather.

  • Orange – Orange promotes activity and creates feelings of enthusiasm and excitement. It's an energetic color that works great in exercise rooms, kitchens, and playrooms. Paired with shades of brown, tan, celery, and brick red, your room will feel more relaxing.

  • Yellow – Yellow is a bright color that stimulates happiness and joy. This color works for any room in the house. To create depth and sophistication, add shades of brown, mustard, and gold in rugs, furnishings, and accessories.

Cool Colors

Cooler colors are relaxing because they remind us of things in nature, like blue oceans and skies, green grass and trees, and soft colors in flowers. Blues and greens are considered the most relaxing colors for home interiors.

  • Blue – Shades of blue, even deeper shades, are calming and soothing. In contrast to red, they lower your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. Soft blues in pastel shades, as well as dark blues like navy, are lovely mixed with textured and plaid upholstery and oyster or white paint.

  • Green – Green is a color that most people like, and it's also the most relaxing color. Light shades like celery and seafoam create fresh spaces, while dark shades like emerald, hunter, and olive create intensity, but they can be toned down with white accents.

  • Purple – As a cool color, shades of purple are relaxing but much more sophisticated. If you want a relaxing bedroom, think lavender or periwinkle. For depth and drama, think eggplant, mauve, or mulberry mixed with shades of pink, off-white, and gold or silver accents.

Neutral Colors

  • Grey – Grey is warm, timeless, and versatile. It's more contemporary than brown and works well in almost any room in the house. Lighter shades like cloud and pearl create relaxing, classic spaces, while darker shades like charcoal and slate create edgy, modern spaces. Gray mixes well with warm and cool colors.

  • White – You can't get more timeless and sophisticated than white. Not only is it clean and calming, but it makes any room feel more open and spacious. There are over 100 shades of white paint that pair beautifully with brown and beige, as well as brighter colors. Accessories in gold, silver, or black make great accents.
